Vedic astrology uses the precise sidereal zodiac. Sideral means “of the stars”, so it keeps track of the locations of all the planets in the context of the constellations. So when your Vedic chart shows that your Sun is in Leo, it was actually in the Leo constellation when you were born. We understand that Vedic astrology adjusts signs for precession, while Western astrology maintains all signs at fixed times of the year, no matter what.
But this doesn't mean that Western astrology is “not real” or that Vedic astrology is “more accurate”. Because remember, astrology in its origins is not about signs, but about the position of the planets in the sky. Neither the tropical nor the sidereal zodiac are astronomically accurate. The constellations do not form a perfect 360º circle in the sky and astrology explains most, but not all, of the constellations that are closest to the ecliptic (despite reports, there is no thirteenth sign called Ophiuchus).

This is why predictions based on Vedic astrology are more accurate. For example, let's say that, according to Western astrology, your sun sign is in Capricorn. In the Vedic system, it could be in Sagittarius.
It's possible that your rising sign and the other planets are also in unknown signs. However, this does not mean that Vedic astrology is inaccurate. Just calculate a horoscope differently. The interpretations are often more precise than in Western astrology.
Western astrology uses a different system, which is much more like an open system in which not much importance is given to traditional methods for preparing the birth chart.
